2021 Alicante Bouschet

Lovers of rich, fruit-forward reds like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon take note, Alicante Bouschet is quite the find! Created when a French botanist, Henri Bouschet, crossed Grenache with Petit Bouschet. It is one of the few varietals in the world that has red flesh inside the skins, also known as a teinturier grape. This wonderfully unique and concentrated wine has a deep dark color and is rich in both its aroma and palate. An aroma of wild black fruits, black olive, dark chocolate, clove, and a palate of fruit forward and smooth, black cherry, brown sugar, cinnamon spice, soft tannins on the finish.

2023 Alicante Bouschet

Related to Grenache, Alicante Bouschet was created on purpose by Henri Bouschet, who came from a family of grape breeders. Often used as a blending grape for its color, Alicante Bouschet is a Teinturier grape where both the skin and the flesh are deeply red. In California Alicante Bouschet has a neat history particularly during the early 1900s. During Prohibition, Alicante became popular due to its thick skin giving it the durability to transport across the country. The 2023 release has a rich mouth feel with a deep fruit flavor, a touch of toasted oak and spice or pepper on the finish! The acidic quality of this wine makes it a perfect food wine. We recommend a bone-in pork chop, smoked brisket or grilled sausages.

Deep ruby in color, this Reserve Barbera has been waiting to be released and show off its balanced flavors of ripe cherries and currant. The 2021 Reserve is bolder than most Barbera’s we’ve released and gives an aroma of black cherry fruit with a touch of anise and spice on the nose. You may pick up on a smooth and creamy mouth feel, often from the malolactic
fermentation of the barrel process. The oak also adds a bit of toasty
vanilla flavor to the finish on this one. We think this is going to be a
fantastic BBQ wine all summer long and suggest anything from a
Filet, Polish Kielbasa to a classic American Cheeseburger…

2021 Barbera

Barbera originated in Northern Italy where it is regarded as the “wine of the people.” In the early 1970’s, Barbera was first planted here in the Sierra Foothills where its ever-growing popularity speaks to its virtues and character. Today Barbera is a top variety of the region, and is often considered an “everyday red,” as its versatility and drinkability make it a perfect wine for any occasion. This 2021 is a classic expression of Barbera. Scents of clove, cinnamon, pepper, and sandalwood precede flavors of warm spice. Flavors of dark cherry and crème brûlée with underlying flavors of coconut, hazelnut and a vanilla finish with a soft mouthfeel and a lingering finish that invites another sip.

This 2022 Barbera is no exception…. With its soft tannins and laid-back
attitude, Barbera thrives in the sun-drenched Sierra Foothills where it has become a major success. Every sip of this Barbera opens more layers of fruit such as cherries, raspberries and plum. You will get a touch of Vanilla in this vintage, but its high acidity is what makes this wine such a food friendly wine! Originating in Western Italy’s Piedmont region, Barbera is referred to as “The People’s Wine” because of its approachability and
enjoyment as an everyday drinking wine. Another great BBQ wine for
summer, but if you’re sick of grilling (how is that possible!?) you can grab this one and pair it with your favorite authentic pizza pie!

2020 Mourvedre

The Mourvèdre grape originates from Spain where it is known as Monastrell but is most well known as one of the major grapes of Rhône region along with Grenache and Syrah. We most often use Mourvèdre as a blending grape in our Midnight every year but on occasion we have enough left over to offer it as a single varietal. Each year we source our Mourvedre from the same grower, locally here in El Dorado County, at around 3000 feet in elevation and it is usually one of the last grapes harvested every year. As this Mourvedre has a longer hang-time on the vine, it produces a softer and less acidic wine that is more medium-bodied. Discover flavors of plum, blackberry and butterscotch. At the end of your palate, you’ll experience more earthy flavors of mushrooms and pepper with well-integrated tannins on the finish.

2023 Mourvedre

Our 2023 Mourvèdre is a wonderful vintage to sip on as the days start to cool off into earlier evenings of the seasons shift. This wine opens up in your glass, to a bouquet of berries and herbs with each swirl. The vibrant acidity and firm tannin structure hints at a graceful aging process. Sip by sip the dark fruits open up to plum and blackberry characteristics, while the spice and anise is lingering in the finish. This is a fine wine to decant and serve with a special lamb dinner, or just an easy choice to accompany a warm fall soup!

2021 Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah earned its name from the small size of its berries and not from the size of the wine. Petite Sirah is one of the biggest, darkest and most tannic wines produced in California. Mostly known as a blending wine for added color and body, we offer it as a stand-alone varietal because it’s just too good not to. This 2021 is rich and full with a fruit forward palate that perfectly balances the bold tannins. Aromas of cacao and dark berries fill the glass while flavors of blackberry jam, sweet plums and dark chocolate make this wine the perfect complement to bolder dishes.

It’s been a while since we had a Syrah release, so we are very excited to share this deep purple wine with you! Benefitting from our environment of sun-filled days and cooler nights, this Syrah holds onto its acidity while providing a very fruitful experience. If you are able to come taste with us in the tasting room, we can’t wait to pour this into your glass. Beaming with blackberry that turns to an almost licorice spice on the nose, this wine opens up to a touch of smoke from the toasted oak barrel it is aged in. Although Syrah often has an herbaceous mineral characteristic to it, the fruits on this Syrah come forward just like we know you like them! Dark fruit flavors like plum and blackberries stand out with just a subtle touch of white and black pepper on the finish. The colder weather is here and this wine makes a great compliment to a warm pot roast, whether in the glass alone, or if a little spilled into the crock pot itself. It’s a” win win” all around!

We are so excited to present to you, our first ever GSM! This classic and very likable blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre is no stranger to the FairPlay AVA! These varietals have found much popularity in the region due to their compatibility with quartz and decomposed granite in our soils. With notes of brighter fruits like cherry and strawberry, this seemingly subtle wine has a very complex and
full-bodied tannin structure that opens up to a fruit forward richness
that teases flavors of spice and pepper.

2023 Grenache

This very approachable wine is the perfect varietal to drink while the sunshine starts to return, and the days become longer. The thin skins of Grenache give this wine a lighter garnet color, with bright fruits of strawberry and cherry flavors coming through with each sip. A well-balanced Grenache doesn’t need a lot of oak to boost its ego, yet through the mellow invite of easy drinking, a complex structure of fruit forward berries opens up to a touch of anise and herbal notes like sage. As our Sierra Foothills climate warms up throughout late spring and approaching summer, our soils start to become dry. This climate gives Grenache the opportunity to thrive, and that is what it does here in Fair Play, with our 2023 as no exception! Take this one to a BBQ with friends and you’ll find it complements the food well. A safe choice as the weather heats up. Don’t be afraid to chill this one down on a warm day!

The 2021 Malbec is here with a BANG! This classic French Bordeaux varietal made its way to Argentina where Malbecs are big and a part of the Argentinian meal. In Fair Play however, the high elevation gives shifty temperature changes and rocky soil drainage that allows the fruit to give deep vibrant flavor and a balanced acidity. Our 2021 Malbec opens up to notes of dark fruits and spice, and tastes like a home run, with flavors of blackberry and elderberry. The tannins are well disciplined making this wine ready to drink now, or a vintage that will cellar well. You can’t go wrong pairing this wine with cured meats, but if you want to impress your guests, try a bacon wrapped fig on the grill! The Malbec 2021 got best of California and we can’t thank you all enough for your continuous support!

2019 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon French Oak

Our American Oak Estate Cabernet Sauvignon style is unique. We aged this limited batch in special American oak barrels to show how
American oak steers the flavors and aromas of a wine in a much
different direction than French oak does. American oak tends to be more potent, giving a perception of sweetness to a wine with a
creamier texture. Made in the same batch, aged in different oak, this rendition is meant to be paired side by side with that of its French oak aged counterpart. Discover similar flavors of black cherry and
blackberry but with a richer, almost sweeter finish. Additional flavors of prunes, black currants, marshmallow, baking spice and a hint of white pepper.

2020 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon French Oak

Our Estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon is old-vine and was planted over 42 years ago. The deeply rooted and vigorous vines produce small berries with thick skins which make for a deeply concentrated wine packed with intense flavor and beautiful, bold color. This vintage was aged in specialty French oak which brings complexity, structure, and finesse to this wine. Aromas of black fruit, violets and star anise will fill the glass. A palate of black cherry, blackberry and hints of black pepper show beautifully up front. Tertiary flavors of vanilla and baking spice make for a silky and textural finish from the French oak. Smooth tannins glide over the palate perfectly complimenting the refreshing balanced acidity.

Our 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon American Oak ” The Lone Ranger ” is back! With ripe fruit thanks to the mineral rich soils of the El Dorado foothills, this 2022 gives off a bright sun-ripened bramble berry and black cherry scent that hints at just a touch of pepper. We always like to give a cabernet a bit of a swirl in the glass to open up to tastes of baked plum and raspberry on our pallets. Aged in American Oak, the sweet vanilla and baking spice adds to the medium tannin structure and balanced acidity of this wine. Fruity with compliments of sage, this wine goes perfectly in your glass as you sit next to a fire pit or among the golden oaks here at Windwalker. Pair this classy Cab with a nice cheese like Manchego, a hearty dish of slow cooked lamb, or drink alone with nothing but the cool crisp breeze of the evening as it quickly sets up for nightfall.

2022 Cabernet Franc

In the tasting room we often get the question, “isn’t this a blending grape?” The answer is, Yes! Cabernet Franc has been used as a blending grape for centuries due to its ability to add support with aromatic lift, complexity and softer tannins to blends. Originating in the Basque country of France, this varietal has the nickname “Big Papa” and is a parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot among others. Our 2022 Cabernet Franc gives an aroma of sweet strawberries, raspberry, mint and roasted jalapeño. A few sips showcase this wine’s elegant structure, and balanced acidity with flavors of ripe black cherry, dark chocolate and a touch of dried herbs! We highly recommend pairing this one with a creamy Mushroom Risotto!

Carefully crafted from our nearly 40-year-old deep rooted vines to create a concentrated wine packed with intense flavor and aroma. Merlot is the second-most planted grape in the world behind its half sibling Cabernet Sauvignon. The aroma has rich red and black fruits, roasted plum, star anise, violets, spice with a palate of bold, bright, and richly complex. Upfront fruits of cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate with hints of marshmallow, vanilla, and dried herbs.

2020 Estate Merlot

Second to it’s partner in crime Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is a top selling red wine varietal in the United States and often outperforms other red wines as a high repeat purchase for the majority of wine drinkers. Despite the popular wine tasting movie Sideways trying to sabotage Merlot, we see Merlot truly making a huge comeback. The industry has noted this specifically among young wine drinkers due to its smooth versatility and high quality. It is a classic Boudreaux varietal, and is a staple in many Bordeaux blends. Not only that, but it ranks as the most widely planted grape varietal in parts of Europe including France ( second globally to Cab). On the Windwalker Estate, we have been growing Merlot for decades and truly love working with and drinking this grape! Our 2020 Merlot is an approachable, fruit forward wine with darker fruits and that smooth finish. Pour yourself a glass of this classy red wine on your deck or patio this Spring! Don’t forget the aged cheeses or perhaps a delightful mushroom based pasta!

2022 Petit Verdot

Spring is in the air, and the floral nose on this Petit Verdot has us excited for happy hour! This inky Bordeaux varietal is a Windwalker classic, and one that we have produced for years. If you’re looking for a full bodied wine packed with dark fruits of plum and black cherry ( think blueberry pie filling!), this is the one for you! With a creamy velvet-like mouth feel, our Petit Verdot is no wimpy wine and will stand up to a ribeye! Right Bank is new to our tasting room! Right Bank is a Merlot dominant Bordeaux Blend. The Bordeaux region in France is divided into left and right banks – meaning river banks, land masses on either side of the Gironde Estuary, fed by 2 rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne. These 2 banks have different terriors.
The right bank is where Merlot is a dominant grape and the left bank Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape.

2021 Lady In Red Bordeaux Blend

Our 2021 Lady in Red contains 4 of the Bordeaux varietals with 57%
Cabernet Sauvignon giving this wine a rich full-bodied flavor. The dark fruits of plum and cherry stand forth on the palette, while the hints of blackberry and spice from the Malbec settle in mid taste. The Petit Verdot helps give these bold flavors balance with medium acidity while a touch of Merlot brings the taste buds to a smooth and well-rounded finish. 2022 “Temperamental Lady” Tempranillo

We are happy to share with you, “Temperamental Lady” Tempranillo, which we all love to see return to our glasses! This 2022 Tempranillo took GOLD and 91 points at the Foothill Wine Festival! Our Tempranillo stays true to its Spanish roots with a robust flavor profile. Fruits like raspberry come through at first sip but quickly turn to darker fruits like
blackberry and plum. Don’t forget that little touch of spice that you just can’t quite put your finger on, is it tobacco or leather? The aging from oak barrels gives it that hint of both and adds to its versatile nature. If you’re looking for a nice cheese to enhance the flavors of this lady, stick to the harder cheeses! We recommended one of our favorites… Manchego! Or, of course, a simple Spanish dish like Paella would complement this wine well!

2020 “Shady Lady” Primitivo

Our 2020 Shady Lady Primitivo has a medium to bold flavor profile, with deep and dark fruits of plum and black cherry that bounce off your taste buds, but true to Primitivo characteristics you still get that touch of black pepper and minerality! Well balanced in acidity, subtle tannins give this wine a luscious mouth feel. Primitivo originated in Croatia and eventually made its way to Southern Italy. It has an identical genetic make up to the American favorite, Zinfandel, which is likely why it grows so well in the Sierra Foothills. Flourishing and ripening off the warm days and cool nights with roots deep into the soil that it’s no wonder we’ve been working with it for years in this region. While she may be Shady, this is one classy lady, and she dresses to impress. If you could only take one wine with you to the party, this would be the one! Shady Lady pairs well with most tomato-based pasta dishes but wouldn’t disappoint if you went with grilled meats instead. Just like all the ladies, she doesn’t stick around for too long so you might want to grab yourself a second one!

2022 “Foxy Lady” Old Vine Zinfandel

One of our favorite ladies has returned! Foxy Lady is an Old Vine Zinfandel, giving bold fruit forward flavors. A jammy red with smoky and exotic spice notes! Our 2022 release is a true representation of a higher elevation old vine zinfandel, with aromatic intensity and lighter color due to the granitic and sandy soils of the Sierras. With a bit of blackberry and boysenberry aromas, one might even notice a subtle floral element to the nose! A lot of our club members just love the deeper black fruits of raspberry, cherry and blackberry to this lady, and this one also hints some flavors of baking spice and pepper! I wouldn’t hesitate sipping on this one with a warm pot roast on a cold rainy day.

2022 ZSG

This is our second vintage of ZSG, the last time we made this wine was in 2017. ZSG is a Zinfandel that was inspired by GSM blends (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre)Originally created to offer a lighter bodied style of Zinfandel that is different from ourSierra Foothills Zinfandel and ourold vine “Foxy Lady” Zin.The Syrah and Grenachesteer the flavors of Zinfandel in a different direction, accenting the spicycharacters of Zinfandel and softening its acidity.We aged this wine in new American oak barrels to further compliment the sweetspice characteristics of the wine and to help smooth outthe tannins from the Syrah.The resulting wine has warm comforting scents reminiscent of fall. It is red fruit driven with an exceptionally soft mouthfeel. Tertiary flavors of mocha and caramel delicately round out the pepper and sweet spice on the finish.

Midnight is back!

Blend: 50% OV Zinfandel, 25% Mourvedre and 25% Petite Sirah

We are so excited to kick off 2026 with a fan favorite, the release of our ever popular Midnight! This blend has always been a club favorite and missed terribly when it is sold out. Lot 16 is a special vintage and we know that you are going to love it! The Petite Sirah gives it that bold and rich flavor profile of deep fruits like plum and blackberry but just enough before finishing with the black cherry and a touch of spice with a vibrant acidity from the Mourvèdre. These two are met with equal parts in this blend and compliment the wine with a complex and firm tannin structure. The Old Vine Zinfandel carries a majority in this blend with a mature balance between the other two, giving you that consistent depth of dark fruit flavors and subtle tannins. You may want to grab yourself another, case that is!

2023 Sangiovese

This June we release the 2023 Sangiovese in your club. The vibrant ripe cherry flavor coming off this wine gives a big juicy fruit on the palette with a bit of cranberry and a subtle touch of spice. Not only is this vintage an easy drinking wine, but it’s a beautiful Ruby color that’s pleasing to the eyes as it shines in your glass. When looking for dishes to pair with this lovely wine for dinner, grilled sausage and peppers would fair well but like most Sangiovese you can’t go wrong with a rustic tomato based Italian dish. We hope you enjoy what Amador County’s warm climate has to give by way of this grape, it’s a big beautiful fruit but also modest enough for the everyday!
